"Casting for Hope" is a non profit organization with a mission to help women in western NC affected by ovarian or related cancers. I had the privilege last year of meeting one of their leaders John Zimmerman at a fly tying event in Maggie Valley NC and became aware of their work. They have many events each year to raise funding for their work with fly fishing tournaments being a major part of their projects. I volunteered to be a stream monitor last year at the "Cherokee Classic" and had a blast. We meet at River Edge Outfitters; who later became one of our sponsors at the Great Smoky Mountain TU chapter "Battle of Gatlinburg" in September. You are then assigned to one of 20 two anglers teams as they compete for over $6,000 dollars in prize money donated by the Cherokee Tribe Council. As they fish you measure and record their catch from the multiple assigned fishing areas. It is easy and you are provided breakfast, lunch, dinner, a T-shirt and best of all meet some great anglers and who knows may some secret spots you would never find on your own in the Cherokee Tribal waters. There are plenty of hotels on the Cherokee side of the Smokies and I camped at Smokemont and made a weekend of it fishing new waters on Sunday.

"We are going to need all the help we can get with volunteers on this event. We usually depend on the high school students at my high school, but that Saturday is graduation Saturday, so we will be out for those kids. We will need all the help we can get. Our current plan is to require all angling teams to provide one volunteer as part of their entry. But the more people we can have the better to help with all other needs, so please! Spread the word and as many folks as you can get to help the better!"
