CLINCH RIVER TU CHAPTER EVENTS-JANUARY 14 & 16, 2016

CLINCH RIVER TU CHAPTER JANUARY 14 & 16, 2016

January’s a big fly tying month for members and friends of the Clinch River Chapter, Trout Unlimited—On Thursday, Jan. 14, you can watch seven expert fly tyers demonstrate a variety of patterns at the free, public chapter meeting; and on six Saturdays starting Jan. 16, you can learn to tie trout flies for yourself in the chapter’s Beginning Fly Tying Course.

* Thursday, Jan. 14, 7 p.m.: Skilled fly tyers will set up separate tying stations around the parish hall at St. Francis Episcopal Church, 158 W. Norris Road, Norris. Everyone attending the free meeting can circulate around the room, watching each tyer create trout flies. All the flies will be different from the patterns to be taught during the upcoming fly tying class.
Clinch River Chapter members who’ve been invited to demonstrate include Dennis Baxter, Steve Brown, Buzz Buffington, Terry Douglas, Jim Ferguson, Clayton Gist and Dave Harrell.

* Saturday, Jan. 16, 9-11 a.m.: This will be the first of six class meetings in the Clinch River Chapter Beginning Fly Tying Course, with class proceeds benefiting the chapter’s conservation and youth education activities.
Guided one-on-one by experienced instructors, students will tie nine different trout flies that are effective in area tailwaters and in the mountains. Techniques learned will enable participants to tie many other flies as well.
The course is limited to 15 students. Classes are scheduled for six Saturday mornings, 9-11, from Jan. 16 through Feb. 20 (snow date Feb. 27), at St. Francis Episcopal Church, 158 W. Norris Road, Norris.
Cost is $125 including an illustrated manual, all materials and, for newcomers, a free one-year membership to Trout Unlimited. Tools will be loaned free of charge to students who don’t have their own.
