IN MEMORY-APRIL BURT-GSM TU BOARD MEMBER

This is my first chapter member that has passed during my time as president and I can simply say April Burt was everything I could have asked for in a chapter member and friend. Whenever we needed a volunteer she was there, donating time and money when the call for help went out. As you can see in the obituary below we were only one of many organizations she helped. God bless her and her family during this time, our hearts and prayers are with them.

April Burt Knoxville, TN April L. Burt, of South Knoxville, passed away peacefully at her home Sunday, August 28, 2016, and left the world a more beautiful and loving place for her time spent here. April was born February 23, 1947 in Jonesborough, Tennessee, and raised in nearby Greene County, Tennessee. Preceding April in death was her husband, Vivian Burt of Knoxville, Tennessee; her parents, Victoria Lewis Barnette Harrison and Barney Barnette both of Greeneville, Tennessee; and her son, Terrance Gregg. She is survived by her daughter, VeVette Turner and husband, David Jenkins of Canada; brothers, Don Barnette of Greeneville and Gerald Barnette of Spartanburg, SC; sister, Audrey Barnette of Knoxville; stepchildren, Deborah Navarro, Doug and Scott Burt; grandchildren, Peyton and Park Turner, Emma Burt, Lucas Burt, Elliott, Evan, Ethan, Elise and Elizabeth Navarro; several nieces, nephews and cousins. She graduated from Greeneville High School and Greeneville Business College and attended East Tennessee State University. April was a Social Worker for the State of Tennessee in the Department of Human Services. She also worked with the Head Start Program and as a real estate agent. She was an active volunteer for numerous organizations: Cub Scout leader and den mother, Girl Scout leader, active member of Youth Builders of Greeneville (serving as president for one year), member of the Andrew Johnson Club, President of the Greene County Association of Realtors, the American Cancer Society Board of Directors, Trout Unlimited Board Member, and many more. April and her husband Viv were very active in the community. Upon their retirement in 1995 they moved to Friendsville, TN, and enjoyed life in their house on the lake. After Viv's death, April moved to Knoxville. In Knoxville, among her many pursuits, April was a community builder at Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church, including serving as auction coordinator, head of the Flower Committee, as a founder of the Refugee Task Force, member of the Memorial Committee, as a trauma recovery leader, organizer of many special receptions, and generally known for her bright and generous spirit and artistic talents. April was also well known for hosting tea parties, as highlighted in Southern Living magazine in 1999. She had a special way of turning a party into an event where guests felt special and welcome. She collected friends, and those friends became her family. She lived life fully and spread positive energy to all those around her. She will be missed by all who knew her. There will be a celebration of life at Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church in Knoxville on Saturday, October 1st at 2:00 p.m., followed by a reception in the Fellowship Hall. Memorial donations in memory of April may be made to the TVUUC Flower Fund, 2931 Kingston Pike, Knoxville, TN 37919.
